Mangrove-linked livelihoods pushed in Aborlan through aquasilviculture training

A two-day training on aquasilviculture was conducted on April 28–29 in Barangay Apo-aporawan to equip fisherfolk with sustainable practices that link mangrove conservation with livelihood generation.

The activity, led by the Palawan Katutubo Mission, Inc. under the Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Princesa in partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) MIMAROPA, gathered 16 participants from the Kapisanan ng Apo-aporawan, Plaridel, Tigman Fishpond Operators Association (KAPTIFOA), and other selected fisherfolk in the municipality.

The training combined lectures on the first day with hands-on activities on the second day, including a planning workshop, site selection and assessment for a proposed aquasilviculture project, and the construction of a fattening cage.

Organizers said the initiative is part of the PAMANA project, which promotes the conservation of mangrove forests while supporting sustainable livelihoods and inclusive governance in Palawan. The project is funded by Forest Foundation Philippines, Inc.

BFAR MIMAROPA trainer Ferdinand B. Lim served as resource speaker, while Palawan Katutubo Mission Executive Director Rev. Fr. Arman R. Limsa also participated throughout the activity.

Participants are expected to continue project development once materials for enclosing the selected site are secured, advancing efforts to integrate fisheries production with mangrove protection in coastal communities.
