Senator Alan Peter Cayetano said that in order for the issue in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) to be properly addressed, a long-term comprehensive strategy is needed.
Cayetano mentioned that while actions are already being taken, the people need to understand not only the strategy of the Philippine government but also that of its allies.
He stated that, unlike during the Cold War between the United States and the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), when US strategies were clear along with those of its allies, the strategy regarding the WPS issue is not as defined.
He added that with ongoing debates about diplomacy in response to China’s aggressions, it is important to set the right tone, knowing when to be soft and when to take a hard stance. Even though agreements have been made, the line is still being crossed.
“But bilang former secretary ng DFA, gusto ko lang malaman ng ating mga kababayan na may solusyon diyan. At hindi talaga lahat napapaliwanag kaagad,” Cayetano said in an interview with the media on Saturday, September 7.
He also mentioned that he has remained silent on whether he agrees with the current handling of the issue because he trusts that the president and his core group know what they are doing and that there are matters that need to be kept confidential.
“And having said that, kailangan talagang mailatag ang isang comprehensive long-term strategy,” he added.
The senator further noted that while China’s aggressions are the hot topic, there are also issues with Malaysia and Vietnam, which have more facilities within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ). However, he pointed out that the government has been able to find ways to engage in dialogue with Malaysia and Vietnam.
“So if we can find a way—I’ve heard there will even be a defense agreement with Vietnam—why can’t we do it with China? Partly, the answer is, it takes two to tango. Kahit gusto mo, kung yung kabila ayaw, wala rin,” he explained.
