Monday’s National Rally for Peace, organized by the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC), was an impressive demonstration of the religious organization’s ability to mobilize its members. While the rally was thoughtfully framed around the universal themes of unity and peace, it is difficult to overlook its political undertones given its timing and the potential implications for national discourse.
The rally comes amidst the looming impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte, with allegations surrounding her alleged misuse of intelligence funds. While the INC leadership had insisted from the outset that the event was not a show of support for Duterte, such disclaimer rings hollow in the face of its timing and the broader context. With public attention focused on the findings of the Quad Committee implicating Duterte, the rally’s message seems less about fostering peace and more about reframing the narrative set by the recent congressional hearings.
One can ask the INC what exactly was the issue of conflict that it is attempting to resolve? The only discernible conflict at this point in time is the political rift between President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and the Dutertes — two former allies that the INC had supported during their election. The rally’s broad theme of peace sought to project a façade of neutrality while subtly steering public sentiment toward reconciliation between the two camps. Peace in this context appears less about resolving issues of national significance and more about muting the criticism on Duterte.
The subtext of the event is evidently the facilitatation of a compromise between Marcos and the Dutertes, deflecting the public’s attention from the findings at the congressional hearings. Whether such objective was not publicly declared by the INC leadership, it appears what it is.
A fair criticism of the rally is that it was mainly seeking to stablize the tenuous Marcos-Duterte alliance. It was a subtle call for political expediency addressed to the two camps.
The INC has long been recognized as a powerful political force, capable of mobilizing millions and shaping public discourse. Its influence has historically extended into the political arena, with the organization endorsing candidates and swaying elections.
The rally was organized under the banner of peace. But then again, was it not a calculated move to shield an ally and redirect public scrutiny? True peace must be anchored in truth, justice, and the unwavering pursuit of accountability.
