Tropical depression outside PAR enhances monsoon rains in Palawan

The state weather bureau reported on Saturday, August 30, that Palawan and Occidental Mindoro will continue to experience heavy rains of up to 100 millimeters due to the southwest monsoon and the trough of a tropical depression outside the Philippine area of responsibility.

Forecaster Grace Castañeda said the tropical depression, formerly named Jacinto, was last seen at 650 kilometers west of Iba, Zambales, with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 70 kph. It is moving west at 15 kph.

“Medyo mabagal lamang po ito, 15 km per hour. Pero sa nakikita po nating outlook ay papalayo naman na po ito ng ating area of responsibility, tuluyang papalayo pa ng ating park,” Castañeda explained.

She said the system no longer has direct wind effects over land but its trough is still bringing rains in parts of northern and central Luzon.

“At sa kasalukuyan, ang kanyang mga epekto, yung trough niya ay nagdudulot ng mga pagulan, pero in terms of hangin ay wala po itong any effect sa anumang bahagi ng ating landmass,” she said.

A weather advisory remains in effect for Palawan and Occidental Mindoro where 50 to 100 millimeters of rainfall are expected until tomorrow, raising the possibility of localized flooding and landslides.

Cloudy skies with scattered rains will prevail over the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Central Luzon, Occidental Mindoro, and Palawan.

The rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila, will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with chances of localized thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.

In the Visayas, cloudy skies with rains are also expected due to the monsoon, while most of Mindanao will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with localized thunderstorms. No gale warning was issued, but moderate seas are expected over northern Luzon, and fishermen are advised to remain cautious.

The state weather bureau reported on Saturday, August 30, that rains will continue across many parts of the country due to the trough of a tropical depression outside the Philippine area of responsibility and the southwest monsoon.
