Authorities seized an unregistered chainsaw in Barangay Iraan, Rizal, Palawan on April 29 after a community tip, stopping equipment that officials say can cut dozens of trees in a single day.
The operation was carried out by the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff South Enforcement Team, with support from local police, barangay officials, and members of the provincial peace and security cluster.
Responders found the chainsaw and freshly cut coconut lumber at the site. An individual later arrived and admitted ownership of the equipment.
Tension briefly rose during verification, but the situation was resolved with the assistance of the Philippine National Police and barangay officials. The chainsaw was surrendered and brought to the barangay hall for documentation and confiscation due to lack of permit or registration.
The equipment is now under the custody of the PCSDS for appropriate legal proceedings.
Authorities said the case shows how community reporting remains key in detecting possible illegal logging activity, as enforcement teams rely on tips to locate equipment used in forest areas.
They also reiterated that the use of chainsaws without proper permits is prohibited, warning that such equipment can be used to rapidly clear trees if left unchecked.
