The state weather bureau on Tuesday morning warned of thunderstorms in parts of Palawan as the southwest monsoon or habagat continues to bring widespread rain.
As of 4:30 a.m., a thunderstorm advisory was in effect for Palawan. PAGASA weather specialist Obet BAdrina said the advisory means there is a chance of thunderstorms lasting one to two hours.
“Nag-issue po tayo ng thunderstorm advisory. Ibig sabihin, posibeng makaranas pa rin ng mga thunderstorm o mga pagkilat-pagkulog sa may bahagin ito ng ating bansa na marin magtagal na isa hanggang dalawang oras,” Badrina explained.
Residents in Palawan can expect generally cloudy skies with a high chance of rain throughout the day due to the habagat.
In Puerto Princesa, temperatures are forecast to range from 25 to 32 degrees Celsius. The Kalayaan Islands will have similar conditions with temperatures between 25 and 32 degrees.
Across the Visayas, much of the region will also see cloudy skies and high chances of rain from the southwest monsoon. Temperatures in Iloilo may reach up to 30 degrees Celsius, while Cebu and Tacloban will see 26 to 31 degrees.
In Mindanao, the northern section, including Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, and Caraga, will experience cloudy skies and rain due to the southwest monsoon.
The rest of Mindanao will have less rain but local thunderstorms remain possible.
“Habang ang nalalabing bahagi ng Mindanao ay posibeng makararanas na mas marit na chance ng mga pag-ulan pero may localist thunderstorms pa rin at efekto din ng southwest monsoon o habagat,” Badrina added.
For Luzon, widespread rain is expected in Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, and Metro Manila due to the habagat. Other areas, like Isabela, Quirino, Aurora, Quezon, and parts of Bicol, will see rain from the trough of a low pressure area.
This LPA was last spotted 650 kilometers east of Infanta, Quezon, and remains at a medium chance of developing into a tropical depression within 24 hours. PAGASA said the chance is still low for Tuesday but may increase in the coming days.
The weather bureau reminded the public that while there is no gale warning, small boats should still watch for stronger waves during thunderstorms.
No tropical cyclone is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility immediately, but July typically sees two to three typhoons.
