Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. on Thursday rejected China’s claim that the Philippines is dumping garbage in the West Philippine Sea and challenged Beijing to present proof.
“If they have accusations, they should prove them,” Teodoro told reporters during the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Yultong in Taguig City.
He said China has made similar claims before but has not shown evidence in proper legal or international forums.
“They keep accusing, but when it’s time to present proof in a fair proceeding under international law, they refuse,” he said.
Teodoro also questioned a video said to show Filipino personnel from the BRP Sierra Madre throwing waste into the sea. He said there is no way to confirm if the video is real.
He also pushed back at China’s criticism of Philippine actions in the area, saying Beijing itself has a record of provocative behavior.
“Fireworks are invented by them, then they will say we are playing with fire? What are they? Out their mind? (Ano sila? Hilo?)” Teodoro said.
The defense chief said the Philippines will continue to strengthen its defense despite criticism.
He added that the country’s position is based on the South China Sea Arbitration Award, which rejected China’s wide claims in the disputed waters.
