SWS survey: Filipinos prefer actions over words in love

A survey that was carried out by the Social Weather Station (SWS) in December 2024 found that just 46% of Filipinos are content with their love life, while 36% said that they could be happier, and 18% declared that they do not have romantic relationships at all.

From 58% in December 2023 to 46%, the proportion of people very pleased with their love relationships dropped by 12 points, according to social research center.

It was the lowest level since it first reached in 2004, twenty years ago.

“Compared to 2023, happiness with love life fell among both men and women across civil status, especially among men with live-in partners,” the survey also noted.

Acts of service
The survey also found that 67 percent of Filipino adults express their affection through “acts of service.”

SWS detailed in a press statement released on February 11 that this is the most favored love language in the country, where numerous individuals choose to convey their affection through actions instead of words.

Individuals who participate in “acts of service” refer to those who prepare meals to show their love, those who cater to the needs of their dear ones, and those who take the initiative to organize without being prompted.

SWS said this means that many Filipinos place a higher importance on deeds than words when it comes to showing affection.

The subsequent statistic is that “words of affirmation” and “quality time” both have a 51% share, which highlights the value of using positive language and spending time with those who are dear to you.

“Giving gifts,” on the other hand, is said to be 33%, while “physical touch” is said to be 29%.

Love and companionship
The survey further found that “love and companionship” are the most desired gifts for Valentine’s Day.

This accounted for 19% of the total replies, which is a higher percentage than the 10% of respondents who selected “money” as their Valentine’s Day gift the year before.

In-person interviews were conducted with 2,160 respondents aged 18 and older as part of the SWS survey conducted during the fourth quarter of 2024.

Of these, 360 were conducted in Metro Manila, the Visayas, and Mindanao, while 1,080 were conducted in Balance Luzon (Luzon without Metro Manila), and so on.

For nationwide percentages, the sampling error margins are ±2%; for balance Luzon, ±3%; for Metro Manila, Visayas, and Mindanao, ±5%.

To get national values, the area estimates were weighted using medium-population projections for 2024 from the Philippine Statistics Authority.

The survey items were non-commissioned. Included on SWS’s initiative, they were published as a public service,” SWS added.
