Tropical Storm Leon remained active in the East Philippine Sea as of 4 a.m. this morning, October 28, located approximately 840 kilometers east of Central Luzon.
PAGASA weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio said that with maximum sustained winds near its center at 85 kilometers per hour and gusts reaching up to 105 kilometers per hour, Leon is expected to continue moving westward, approaching Northern Luzon.
“Inasahan pa rin natin na ito’y kikilos, pakanluran o papalapit sa Northern Luzon. Pero bumagal ang pagkilos nito,” he said.
“Ngayon inasahan natin na ito’y—ang kanyang pagtakbo ay nasa 10 km per hour. Nanatili pa rin nasa ilalim ng Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 ang eastern portion ng Cagayan, eastern portion ng Isabela, at northeastern portion ng Catanduanes,” he added.
Based on PAGASA’s forecast track, Leon is likely to approach the Batanes area between Wednesday (October 30) and Thursday (October 31). By Friday, it may make landfall over Taiwan, potentially impacting nearby regions.
As Leon remains over open waters, PAGASA predicts it could strengthen into a severe tropical storm by this afternoon, potentially raising the risk to areas within its path.
Areas across Batangas, much of the MIMAROPA and Bicol regions, central and northern parts of the Visayas, Northern Mindanao, and the Caraga region can expect occasional gusty conditions.
Leon’s extension, or trough, is affecting the western areas of Southern Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao, leading to scattered rainfall and thunderstorms. Although intense rain isn’t forecasted at this time, PAGASA warns residents to stay vigilant for sudden weather updates, particularly advisories related to rainfall and potential flooding.
PAGASA has issued coastal advisories for elevated sea conditions due to Leon’s influence. Wave heights reaching up to 5 meters are expected across Batanes’ seaboards, while waves up to 4 meters are anticipated around the Babuyan Islands, Isabela, and the eastern seaboard of mainland Cagayan.
Waves in the seaboards of northern Aurora and Camarines Norte may rise to 3 meters, similar to other affected areas in Northern and Eastern Samar.
