Police in South Africa have recovered suspected human remains after a high-risk operation involving a crocodile along the Komati River, with an officer lowered into the water to secure the animal.
The operation moved forward after Captain Johan “Pottie” Potgieter was hoisted from a helicopter and deployed into the river, where authorities said the crocodile had already been euthanized.
He used a rope to secure the animal, allowing it to be lifted and relocated so investigators could examine its remains.
Authorities later retrieved body parts from the crocodile’s intestines, which have been sent for DNA analysis to confirm the identity of a suspected missing person.
Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane said the officer’s actions went beyond normal duty.
“Captain Potgieter’s willingness to place his own life at risk, going far beyond the call of duty, reflects the unwavering commitment of SAPS members to serve and protect, even in the face of danger that could have cost him his life,” Dimpane said.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said the operation required coordination between police and environmental authorities, given the risks involved in handling a crocodile in an open river setting.
SAPS said the DNA results will be key to identifying the remains and advancing the investigation.
