Around 200 seaweed farmers in Green Island, Barangay Tumarbong received rehabilitation support from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) on April 22, aimed at helping them recover from losses caused by typhoons that hit the province in 2025.
The assistance, distributed at the Roxas Municipal Gymnasium, forms part of BFAR’s Enhanced Philippine Seaweed Development Program–Seaweed Rehabilitation Program, which targets communities affected by Typhoons Tino and Uwan.
BFAR, through the Provincial Fisheries Office Southern Palawan, led the activity in coordination with the Municipal Agriculture Office of Roxas to ensure the timely delivery of seaweed farming implements to beneficiaries.
The support is expected to help farmers rebuild damaged seaweed farms, restore production, and improve the resilience of the local seaweed industry, a key source of livelihood in coastal areas of the municipality.
Roxas Mayor Pedy Sabando, who attended the distribution, underscored the importance of sustaining seaweed farming as a primary income source for fisherfolk in the town.
Beneficiaries said the assistance would help them resume operations after disruptions caused by last year’s typhoons.
BFAR said the intervention is part of broader efforts to strengthen coastal livelihoods and ensure food security in vulnerable communities, particularly in areas like Palawan that are frequently affected by climate-related disasters.
