Fish vendors in Barangay Rio Tuba are expected to benefit from increased consumer confidence, improved participation, and higher income following the inauguration of the renovated public market and the installation of a renewable energy source through a solar power system on Friday.
The project was made possible through the strengthened partnership between Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation (RTN) and the local government of Barangay Rio Tuba, aimed at providing clean energy while supporting the growth of the local economy.
Community leaders said the upgraded public market will provide vendors and consumers with a safer and more comfortable trading environment, while the solar power installation will ensure a more sustainable and reliable energy source for market operations.
The initiative contributes to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDG), particularly Goal 7 on Affordable and Clean Energy and Goal 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities.
According to RTN, the project forms part of its Social Development and Management Program (SDMP), a mandatory community development program under the Philippine Mining Act of 1995 or Republic Act No. 7942.
The company emphasized that the project demonstrates how responsible mining can contribute to building resilient communities by supporting sustainable livelihoods, improving public infrastructure, and promoting access to clean energy.
Residents and vendors are expected to directly benefit from the improvements, which are seen as a step toward strengthening economic opportunities and enhancing the quality of life in Barangay Rio Tuba.
