Around 300 taekwondo practitioners from across Palawan and nearby areas took part in the 2026 Southern Palawan Taekwondo Championships held at the RTN Gymnasium in Rio Tuba, where the event combined sports competition with discussions on community development and stewardship.
Athletes competed in Kyorugi, Speed Kicking, and Poomsae events, drawing strong participation and showcasing discipline, technique, and sportsmanship throughout the day-long tournament.
While the matches highlighted athletic performance, organizers also used the event to emphasize the connection between youth development and local industry practices in the province.
Representatives from Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation (RTNMC) and Nickel Asia Corporation (NAC) presented their operations approach, highlighting what they described as an integrated focus on safety, environmental management, and socio-economic development.
They said the values demonstrated in taekwondo—integrity, perseverance, and respect—also reflect principles applied in responsible resource management.
The activity also served as an engagement platform for athletes and families, offering insights into development efforts in southern Palawan and the role of various stakeholders in local progress.
Organizers said the initiative underscores the importance of shaping not only athletic excellence among the youth but also awareness of community and industry responsibilities in the province.
