A Pulse Asia survey found that 93 percent of Filipinos believe rooftop solar systems should be made more affordable as the country’s electricity demand continues to grow.
In a news release Thursday, Pulse Asia said the findings reflect strong public support for measures that would expand the use of renewable energy, lower electricity costs, and reduce the country’s dependence on imported fuel.
“Nearly all Filipinos agree that the government should make rooftop solar more affordable,” the survey firm said.
The survey also found that 97 percent of respondents are concerned about the country’s current energy challenges, while 77 percent are aware that the Philippines relies heavily on imported oil, coal, and natural gas to meet its energy needs.
When asked about possible solutions, 66 percent said expanding renewable energy is the best way to address the country’s energy concerns. Among renewable energy options, making rooftop solar more affordable ranked as the top priority.
Despite strong public support, respondents identified cost as the biggest barrier to installing rooftop solar systems.
Pulse Asia said many Filipinos believe lower installation costs, better public information, and easier access to financing would encourage more households to adopt the technology.
The survey found that 91 percent of respondents believe rooftop solar could become widely used if affordable financing options were available.
Meanwhile, 85 percent said rooftop solar is no longer a luxury but a necessity for Filipino households.
