The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) works on generating timely data on the volume and price of fish species in Palawan through its ongoing quarterly survey in commercial and municipal fisheries.
The fish species unloaded at municipal and commercial landing centers across the province of Palawan will be recorded through the Quarterly Commercial Fisheries Survey (QCFS) and Quarterly Municipal Fisheries Survey (QMFS) for the first quarter of 2026.
PSA Palawan Officer-in-Charge and Supervising Statistical Specialist Oscar Gatpandan said these surveys are conducted to provide vital information on the volume and value of fish production.
“The gathered data will serve as a key basis for policymakers in formulating evidence-based programs and policies aimed at sustaining and strengthening the fisheries industry,” said Gatpandan.
Palawan plays a crucial role in national fisheries development as it serves as the largest contributor to the fisheries sector of MIMAROPA region.
The QMFS covers the fishing operations within the municipal waters up to 15 kilometers from the shoreline. It includes even without the use of fishing vessels or with the use of vessels of three tons or less.
The scope of QMFS is in 20 traditional municipal landing centers and two non-traditional landing centers.
The QCFS, on the other hand, covers fishing operations utilizing fishing vessels of more than three gross tons operating in marine waters beyond 15 kilometers from the shoreline. The sample areas will include nine commercial traditional landing centers and one non-traditional landing center.
Meanwhile, PSA Palawan seeks full support and cooperation from fishing operators, boat owners, and key informants in providing necessary and accurate information for the conduct of surveys. (PIA Palawan)
