The Provincial Veterinary Office (ProVet) of Palawan has intensified its efforts to boost livestock production and strengthen animal health and welfare programs across the province through a series of breeding and vaccination activities held in the municipalities of Narra and Taytay.
Recently, ProVet conducted massive pregnancy diagnosis, estrus synchronization, and artificial insemination among cattle and carabaos in the two towns, benefiting a total of 109 animals, 66 of which were successfully inseminated.
In addition, 196 farmers availed of animal health services that included deworming and vitamin supplementation for 319 livestock.
Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Darius Mangcucang said the activity aims to increase and improve the production of high-quality large ruminants such as cattle and carabaos, noting that Palawan remains one of the country’s key suppliers of beef and carabao meat.
He explained that the program also seeks to enhance local breeds through the use of superior genetic materials, including Bulgarian Murrah buffalo semen for carabaos and Brahman (meat type) and Holstein Friesian (dairy type) for cattle.
“Ang programang ito ay hindi lamang nakatuon sa pagpaparami ng hayop kundi sa pagtiyak na ang mga ito ay malulusog, may mataas na kalidad, at makatutulong sa pag-angat ng kabuhayan ng ating mga magsasaka,” Mangcucang said.
ProVet also assured that similar livestock programs will be rolled out in other municipalities to reach more farmers and promote a healthier and more productive livestock industry under Gov. Amy Alvarez’s PALAWAN+Plus development agenda.
Meanwhile, as part of its campaign against rabies, ProVet carried out a mass castration and anti-rabies vaccination drive for pets in Narra from September 23 to 25.
The activity benefited 95 pet owners, with 100 dogs and cats neutered and 125 vaccinated against rabies.
The initiative forms part of the province’s Rabies Eradication Program, conducted in partnership with the Municipal Agriculture Office of Narra and in observance of World Rabies Day on September 28.
According to ProVet, castration helps control pet population growth, which is crucial in preventing the spread of rabies and other diseases.
Through these continuing efforts, the provincial government of Palawan ensures the protection of both animals and residents—advancing animal health, public safety, and sustainable agricultural development in the province.
