Residents in Bogo City who lost their homes in the 6.9-magnitude earthquake will be moved to a government “tent city,” President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said Thursday during a visit to Cebu.
Marcos visited Bogo City to check on the extent of the damage and relief operations.
He said many residents were reluctant to return to damaged homes and buildings, including evacuation centers, out of fear of further collapse.
“Minamadali na lang natin… para naman may masilungan sila dito. Dahil marami, tama rin naman, natatakot na bumalik sa building. Mas gusto nila dito sila sa labas,” Marcos said during a briefing at city hall, which was also heavily damaged.
The president said the Philippine Red Cross would be tapped to provide large medical field tents that had been used during the COVID-19 pandemic.
These structures could be quickly built, he added, and would withstand heavy rains.
He added that the temporary site would be equipped with basic needs such as food, water and electricity. “Kung anuman ang pangangailangan ng tao ay titiyakin natin na mayroon,” he said.
Marcos assured earthquake-hit communities of continued government support as recovery efforts move forward.
