PNP steps up patrols as economic pressures raise crime concerns

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is ramping up patrol operations and visibility nationwide amid concerns that worsening economic conditions could trigger an increase in theft and robbery incidents.

PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño said law enforcement units have been directed to intensify preventive measures on the ground as rising prices of basic goods and fuel place added strain on households.

“The Philippine National Police acknowledges that it won’t just stay a perception. It’s possible that there’d be an increase in crimes against property,” Tuaño said, noting that police are preparing for such a scenario.

He said the PNP is prioritizing high-visibility policing, including more officers deployed in public areas, transport hubs, and communities, to deter would-be offenders and reassure the public.

“Our number one intervention is police visibility so that the people can really feel that the Philippine National Police is there,” he added.

Beyond patrols, the police organization is also strengthening coordination among regional units to replicate effective anti-crime strategies, particularly in addressing robbery and theft.

Despite the heightened alert, the PNP reported that overall focus crimes have declined in early 2026. Data showed 6,377 cases recorded from January 1 to March 12, lower than the 7,301 incidents logged in the same period last year.

Focus crimes include major offenses such as murder, homicide, physical injury, rape, robbery, theft, and carjacking.

Authorities linked the concern over potential crime increases to external economic factors, including surging fuel costs tied to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East that have disrupted oil supply and driven up prices.

The PNP said it would continue monitoring crime trends closely while adjusting its deployment strategies to prevent any spillover of economic hardship into criminal activity.
