The Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff (PCSDS) intensified enforcement operations against illegal chainsaw use in El Nido, Bataraza and Taytay from October to December, resulting in multiple confiscations and charges against violators.
PCSDS reported that two individuals in Sitio Dimirawat, Barangay Teneguiban, El Nido, were apprehended on October 28 for operating a chainsaw without the required permit.
The enforcement team responded to a report around 3:35 p.m. and found them cutting a coconut tree. Authorities seized one chainsaw unit, a bolo with holster, and a toolbox. The suspects were charged for violating Republic Act 9175, or the Chainsaw Act of 2002, and PCSD Administrative Order No. 7.
On November 24, a mobile patrol in Sitio Litasan, Barangay Buliluyan, Bataraza intercepted an ongoing coco lumber operation and confiscated an unregistered OGAWA chainsaw. PCSDS said the operator failed to show permits.
The PCSDS North Enforcement Team, along with the 27th Marine Company / 7th Marine Rifle Battalion, confiscated another unregistered chainsaw on December 3 in Sitio Aborlan, Barangay Pularaquen (Canique), Taytay.
Following a citizen tip, officers traced the sound of a running machine and caught an individual who could not present any approval for its use. The person was brought to the barangay hall for blotter and identity verification.
PCSDS said the unauthorized ownership and operation of chainsaws remain prohibited under national and local regulations and encouraged the public to report similar activities to protect Palawan’s forests and natural resources.
