The government has put on hold a scheduled increase in public transport fares, with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directing agencies to prioritize commuter relief and financial support for drivers amid rising fuel costs.
The decision followed the recent approval of higher fares for jeepneys, buses, airport taxis, and transport network vehicles, which were supposed to take effect the next day.
Marcos said the timing of the increase was not appropriate given the current economic strain linked to global tensions affecting oil prices.
“In my opinion, because we still have problems due to the war in the Middle East, I said maybe this is not the time to raise fares for our countrymen,” he said.
He ordered the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to suspend and defer the implementation, emphasizing the need to support daily commuters.
“That’s why I ordered the DOTr to suspend the fare hike for now… because we are currently in the middle of this situation where we need to continue supporting our commuters,” he added.
Instead of higher fares, the administration is advancing alternative measures, including free ride programs, discounted fares on rail systems, and reduced toll charges to lessen transport expenses.
Authorities are also moving to cushion the impact on drivers, who stand to lose income from the halted increase. Cash assistance and fuel subsidies are being expedited, with initial payouts already underway.
Tricycle drivers in Metro Manila are among the first to receive aid, with 139,000 beneficiaries set to get P5,000 each under a government assistance program. Broader distribution for other public utility vehicle operators is expected to follow.
Fuel subsidies are likewise scheduled for release before the end of March, with varying amounts depending on the sector.
The Palace said the measures are intended to minimize the impact of external pressures, particularly the ongoing instability in the Middle East, which has contributed to higher global oil prices.
Marcos assured the public that the government is taking steps to keep daily life manageable despite the economic headwinds.
“Please remember that your government is always here. We are constantly thinking of new ways to ensure that your daily lives remain normal, orderly, and safe,” he said.
