Color and design company Pantone has named Cloud Dancer, a soft white shade, as its 2026 color of the year, marking the first time in the program’s history that a white hue received the designation.
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said the choice is not a case of “defaulting to white,” but a symbol of possibility. She described Cloud Dancer as a blank canvas that “opens up new avenues and ways of thinking.”
Cloud Dancer, also known as Pantone 11-4201, is intended to represent calm amid a fast-paced world.
Eiseman called it a “whisper of calm in a noisy world,” while Laurie Pressman, vice president of the institute, said it is a versatile structural color that “goes well with anything and everything.”
Pressman said the selection is not connected to race or skin tone, noting that similar concerns were raised over previous colors such as Peach Fuzz and Mocha Mousse.
“Skin tones did not factor into this at all, For us it’s really about, at such a basic level, what are people looking for that color can hope to answer?,” she said.
Pantone’s annual Color of the Year announcement has grown into a global trendsetter since it began more than two decades ago, now influencing product design, branding partnerships and retail offerings.
Cloud Dancer follows three recent selections aimed at responding to global mood shifts: Viva Magenta in 2023, Peach Fuzz in 2024, and Mocha Mousse in 2025.
Pressman described the new choice as “a softer white,” natural-looking rather than bright or bleached, reflecting a more grounded sentiment heading into 2026.
