The provincial government of Palawan is strengthening a community-based approach in its fight against illegal drugs, placing greater focus on prevention, coordination, and local services rather than relying solely on law enforcement.
This approach was highlighted during a summit conducted by the Palawan Anti-Drug Abuse Council in collaboration with the Department of the Interior and Local Government–Palawan, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency–Palawan, and the Palawan Police Provincial Office. The activity, held at the VJR Hall of the provincial capitol on January 26–27, brought together Municipal Anti-Drug Abuse Councils (MADACs) to intensify the anti-drug campaign and strengthen the capacity of government agencies at the local level.
The summit focused on ensuring that the efforts of local government units remain consistent in delivering concrete actions and services to communities in the fight against illegal drugs, particularly at the municipal and barangay levels.
DILG Palawan Provincial Director Juanito D. Olave Jr. said the drug problem remains a serious concern that requires a broader approach involving multiple sectors.
“The fight against illegal drugs remains a national security concern that requires holistic, multi-faceted strategy beyond traditional law enforcement,” Olave said.
He stressed the importance of coordination among national and local agencies, citing synergy as a key element in bridging national policies with on-the-ground implementation through programs such as BIDA and SICAP-BADAC.
Olave also affirmed the Department of the Interior and Local Government’s commitment to continue working with the provincial government in pursuing long-term solutions aimed at maintaining safe and drug-free communities across Palawan.
At the end of the summit, outstanding Municipal Anti-Drug Abuse Councils were recognized and provided with financial assistance to help improve their programs and strengthen their interventions against illegal drugs.
