After winning in the city and provincial levels of the 1st Philhealth National Quiz Bee, contenders from Puerto Princesa and Palawan Schools Division are now ready to compete in the Regional Level.

Desiree Jane D. Castillo, Grade 10 student of San Jose National High School, will represent Puerto Princesa Schools Division after winning the competition in the City Schools Division level conducted on November 5 at Puerto Princesa City Schools Division Office.

On the other hand, Edilyn Rose B. Bacuel, Grade 11 of Jose P. Rizal National High School, will represent the Palawan Schools Division after winning the quiz bee at the provincial level conducted at Palawan Schools Division Office on the same date.

Castillo and Bacquel will compete with other contenders from Batangas City, Lipa City, Tanauan City, Calapan City, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Batangas and Romblon Provinces on November 21 and the winner on the regional level will represent the Mimaropa Region in Area II South Luzon level.

In 2017, the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (Philhealth) developed a Philhealth Learner’s Materials (PLM) for Grade 10-12 and certified by the Department of Education (DepEd) in compliance with the K-12 Curriculum.

The said material was used in teaching the PhilHealth Lesson in the Health Component of the Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health or MAPEH subject.

According to Marian Carlos, Information Officer of Philhealth-Palawan, the integration of the PML into Grade 10-12 curricula aims to provide students with the knowledge and understanding about PhilHealth and the values and principles of social health insurance, particularly on the National Health Insurance Program (NHIP).

Through the conduct of PhilHealth Quiz Bee, in coordination with DepEd, the two agencies can test the knowledge of students on PhilHealth products and services; check their spelling abilities on health-related terms; enhance and deepen their knowledge about PhilHealth and encourage them to become advocates of Philhealth. This will also serve as a venue for the improvement of PLM and boost the adoption of this material by private secondary schools. (OCJ/PIA-MIMAROPA, Palawan)
