The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced on Saturday the official start of the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) season, marking the gradual onset of the rainy period in the country.
In its statement, PAGASA said recent weather analyses showed the presence of southwesterly winds over the western section of the Philippines, a key indicator that the monsoon has begun. The agency added that these conditions may continue due to the development of a tropical cyclone over the Philippine Sea, which is further influencing prevailing weather patterns.
“With the intrusion of westerly winds and the progression of the general meteorological pattern across the country, these developments suggest the start of the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), which is one of the precursors of the onset of the rainy season,” PAGASA said.
Along with the declaration, PAGASA issued a heavy rainfall outlook due to the Southwest Monsoon, warning of significant rain in several areas over the coming days.
PAGASA said rainfall may be higher in mountainous and elevated areas, while some locations may experience worsened impacts due to accumulated rainfall from previous days. The agency also advised concerned disaster risk reduction and management offices to take necessary measures to safeguard lives and property.
It added that its regional services divisions may issue Heavy Rainfall Warnings, Thunderstorm Advisories, and other severe weather updates as needed. PAGASA said that unless significant changes occur, the next weather advisory will be released at 5:00 a.m. the following day.
