National Security Adviser Eduardo SL Oban Jr. called on young Filipinos to take an active role in protecting the country’s maritime interests, saying safeguarding the seas is a shared responsibility that extends beyond territorial defense.
Oban made the call during the launch of the Bantay Dagat Youth Ambassadors at the “Safeguarding Our Seas: Multi-sector Dialogue on Stewardship and National Duty” on August 28 in San Juan City.
He urged the newly commissioned youth ambassadors to develop an “archipelagic consciousness” that recognizes the Philippines’ seas as vital to the country’s security, identity and future.
“Safeguarding the West Philippine Sea is a whole-of-nation responsibility,” Oban said, emphasizing that maritime security also involves protecting marine ecosystems, ensuring food and economic security, and countering misinformation and disinformation.
The national security adviser also reaffirmed that the Philippines’ position in the West Philippine Sea is anchored on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 2016 Arbitral Award.
Oban challenged the youth ambassadors to turn their commitment into action through responsible citizenship, environmental stewardship and advocacy grounded in truth and international law.
The launch brought together stakeholders for a multi-sector dialogue focused on maritime stewardship and national duty, with the youth being positioned as advocates for the protection of the country’s maritime future.
