More than 50 educators from Northern Palawan visited the mining operations of Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation (RTNMC) in Bataraza as part of an educational program aimed at providing firsthand exposure to responsible mining and environmental management practices.
A total of 57 faculty members and teachers from 22 secondary schools participated in the educational mine visit at RTNMC’s site in Barangay Rio Tuba, where they were introduced to the company’s mining operations, environmental protection measures, and rehabilitation programs.
According to RTNMC, the activity was designed to help educators better understand how mineral resource development is carried out alongside environmental conservation efforts and community development initiatives.
Most of the participants came from municipalities in Northern Palawan, where tourism serves as a major economic activity. The visit allowed them to observe how mining operations are managed in Southern Palawan and how environmental safeguards are integrated into day-to-day operations.
During the tour, the educators visited various facilities and project sites, including areas undergoing rehabilitation, to learn about the company’s approach to mitigating environmental impacts and restoring mined-out lands.
RTNMC said the program also aims to provide teachers with factual and firsthand information about the mining industry, enabling them to share informed perspectives with students and their respective communities.
The company added that educators play a key role in shaping public understanding of issues involving natural resources, environmental protection, and economic development, making them important partners in promoting informed discussions about the mining sector.
The educational mine visit forms part of RTNMC’s continuing stakeholder engagement initiatives, which seek to raise awareness of responsible mining practices and their role in supporting local development while maintaining environmental sustainability.
