Northeast monsoon, easterlies bring continued rains across Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao

Several parts of the country will continue to experience rain on Monday as the northeast monsoon and easterlies affect large areas of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, the state weather bureau said.

PAGASA weather specialist Obet Badrina said the northeast monsoon remains strong and is bringing light to moderate rains over Cagayan Valley, the Cordillera Administrative Region, Aurora, and Quezon.

The easterlies are affecting the Bicol Region, parts of Eastern Visayas, and eastern Mindanao, with cloudy skies and periods of rain.’

“Medyo malakas po ang hanging-amihan ngayon o northeast monsoon na makaka-apekto pa rin sa malaking bahagi ng Luzon,” he said.

The weather bureau said Luzon will generally experience cloudy skies with scattered light rains, while Visayas and Mindanao will see localized rain showers and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon and evening.

Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas are expected to have a higher chance of rain due to the easterlies.

“Sa ngayon din po, wala tayong minomonitor pa na cloud clusters or maging low pressure areas sa loob at labas ng Philippine Area of Responsibility,” Badrina said, adding that the chance of a tropical cyclone forming in the next three days remains low.

A gale warning remains in effect over the coastal waters of Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and Aurora due to strong winds associated with the northeast monsoon.

Sea conditions in these areas are expected to be rough to very rough, posing risks to small fishing boats and other small sea vessels.

Moderate to rough seas are expected over other parts of Luzon, while slight to moderate sea conditions will prevail over most areas of Visayas and Mindanao.

The weather bureau said the northeast monsoon may weaken in the coming days, raising the possibility of lifting the gale warning.
For the rest of the week, rains may persist over Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas, while the intertropical convergence zone may bring continued rainfall over eastern Mindanao, including Caraga and Davao Region.

No low pressure area or tropical cyclone is currently being monitored.
