No storms expected until end of July

The state weather bureau said Sunday there is no tropical cyclone expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) until the end of the month.

Weather specialist Obet Badrina said in a live briefing that while the southwest monsoon continues to bring rains over parts of Luzon, no new storm system is forming or expected to develop in the next few days.

“Base sa mga pinakahuling datos natin, medyo maliit na yung chance na magkaroon tayo ng bagyo sa mga susunod na araw,” Badrina said.

As of early Sunday, three tropical weather systems were being monitored by PAGASA.

Two former cyclones—Emong (international name: Co-May) and a low-pressure area that used to be Dante—are expected to dissipate outside PAR.

A third system, Typhoon Krosa, is also outside the country’s monitoring zone and is moving further away.

“Makikita natin sa ngayon, wala namang low pressure area sa loob ng Philippine Area of Responsibility,” Badrina said.

“At mga kababayan, base po sa mga pinakahuling datos natin, medyo maliit na yung chance na magkaroon tayo ng bagyo sa mga susunod na araw,” he added.

Despite the absence of tropical cyclones, the southwest monsoon or habagat continues to affect the western section of Luzon. Moderate to heavy rains are expected over Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro.

Cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms will prevail over the rest of Northern and Central Luzon, including Metro Manila. The eastern side of Luzon and most parts of the Visayas and Mindanao will generally have fair weather, although localized thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon and evening.

For Monday, which coincides with the President’s State of the Nation Address, PAGASA said rain is still possible over western Luzon, including Ilocos Region, Abra, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro. In Metro Manila, fair weather is expected in the morning, with a chance of thunderstorms by late afternoon.

By Tuesday, rains from the southwest monsoon are expected to persist over parts of Zambales, Bataan, Pangasinan, Benguet, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Abra, and Ilocos Norte.

No gale warnings were raised over any seaboard in the country. However, moderate to rough seas are expected over the western and extreme northern parts of Luzon, where small boats are advised to take caution, especially during thunderstorms.

In Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao, partly cloudy to cloudy skies will dominate, with chances of rain in the afternoon due to thunderstorms. Daytime temperatures are expected to remain warm across the country, ranging from 25°C to 34°C depending on the location.
