The Provincial Board has urged local government units to ban the flying of sky lanterns and helium-filled balloons during the celebration of Undas 2019.

Authored by Board Member (BM) Clarito Demaala IV, the resolution urges all local government units (LGUs) in Palawan to promote an environment-friendly observance of Undas.

“There are some who ignite and fly lanterns as well as helium-filled balloons which have been proven to be harmful towards our wildlife and the environment in general,” stated Demaala in the draft of his proposed motion.

Demaala said it has been observed throughout the past years’ celebration of Undas that tons of trash were accumulated from the cemeteries.

Demaala in his draft resolution also implored the LGUs to “vehemently impose” proper garbage disposal during the celebration and implement appropriate measures to ensure that this year’s celebration of Undas acquires “environmental consciousness”.

“The Provincial Government of Palawan believes that being environmentally-conscious should be adopted and practiced by each and every Palaweño on a daily basis to ensure that the future generation shall be able to enjoy those that we enjoy today,” Demaala also said in the draft of his resolution.

He also added the motion is in line with Section 16 of the Constitution that says a “State shall protect and advance the right of the people to a balanced and healthful ecology in accord with the rhythm and harmony of nature”.
