A night heron was rescued from possible harm after it was found being barked at by dogs beside a house in Barangay San Manuel, Purok Bayanihan, on Dec. 19.
The bird, identified as a night heron (Nycticorax caledonicus), was discovered around 1 p.m., according to concerned citizen Catherine Apellana. She said her child first noticed the bird surrounded by dogs. When her husband approached, they found that the bird was unable to fly and remained on the side of their house.
Out of concern for its safety, Apellana immediately reported the incident to barangay officials. With the help of Cristina Banico, they secured the night heron in a cage to prevent further injury.
The bird was later turned over to the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff for proper care and appropriate action. Residents said they brought the animal to the agency as it handles wildlife turnover in their area.
The PCSDS renewed its call for the public to help protect Palawan’s wildlife, urging residents to report or turn over animals found in distress. The agency said concerned citizens may directly coordinate with its offices or send a message through the official PCSDS Facebook page to ensure prompt and proper response.
