The Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) will conduct a comprehensive Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) in all 23 barangays of Narra in February.
The study aims to measure, classify, and assess the volume of waste generated by the community.
MENRO chief Neil Varcas said the data to be gathered from the WACS will serve as the basis for updating Narra’s 10-year Solid Waste Management Plan.
Barangay volunteers will play a key role in the activity. For three days, volunteers will collect their household waste, which MENRO will measure and analyze to determine the waste generation rate per individual. The volunteers underwent orientation sessions from January 21 to 29 ahead of the study.
“Ang mga basura ng mga volunteers ay iso-sort namin into categories gaya ng residuals, recyclables, at biodegradables. Hihimayin din ito sa sub-categories gaya ng leather, rubber, at textile na may potensyal pa para sa recycling,” Varcas explained.
Waste collection will be done through four clusters, following a three-day “ipon-kolekta” cycle. Varcas said waste should already be segregated before collection, with the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office assisting in the final evaluation.
The local government expects the study to help develop a quality and sustainable plan for better environmental management in Narra.
