Courtney Jewel Trangia of Masbate claimed the first gold medal of the Batang Pinoy 2024 in a historic fashion, breaking her own record in the Under-18 Girls’ Discus Throw on Sunday morning at the Ramon V. Mitra Sports Complex.
The 17-year-old delivered an extraordinary performance, throwing a distance of 38.30 meters to secure her third consecutive gold in the event.
Trangia shattered the previous record of 37.17 meters, which she set during the 2023 edition of the youth games in Manila.
Her gold medal continues her reign as the undisputed champion in the girls’ discus throw, having also won the event in 2022 in Vigan City and in 2023 in Manila. Her victory marked a fitting conclusion to her Batang Pinoy career and a strong start to the week-long event.
Meanwhile, Hanna Ashlei Regaya of Davao del Norte took the silver medal, and Trisha Gayle Nalla of Maasin City won the bronze in the same event.
Trangia’s focus now shifts to the international stage as she heads to Kota Kinabalu for the Malaysia Open 2024, which began on the same day.
The Batang Pinoy 2024, hosted in Puerto Princesa City, opened with a burst of excitement as Trangia’s record-breaking performance set the tone for the rest of the competition.
