A member of the Philippine Marine Corps (PMC) was shot dead on Good Friday in Barangay Tagusao, Quezon town, near a village cockfighting ring by two unidentified gunmen, a spot report from the Police Regional Office (PRO) MIMAROPA said.

The victim was identified Sunday as Corporal Alfred John de Leon, enlisted personnel of the PMC’s Marine Battalion Landing Team 4 (MBLT 4) stationed in Barangay Sofronio Española.

The police report said De Leon was shot dead on April 19 around 3:30 p.m. while standing in front of the cockfighting ring in Tagusao.

“Two unidentified personalities arrived and shot him several times, resulting in his instantaneous death. After the incident, the suspects fled to an unknown direction,” the spot report stated.

Meanwhile, a MBLT 4 official who declined to be named because he is not authorized to speak about the incident, said the suspects might be armed members of the New People’s Army (NPA).

“Ang sabi ay nagpakilala daw na NPA. Sumigaw pa nga raw ‘yong isang suspek na NPA sila,” the official said.

The PRO MIMAROPA said a manhunt operation is now being conducted for the possible arrest of the suspects.
