Police launched a manhunt operation after an unidentified suspect shot and killed a 64-year-old man in broad daylight in Barangay San Jose on Friday, June 5.
The victim, identified by police only as “Tinoy,” a resident of Barangay Decalachao, was reportedly in the village to buy fish when he was attacked by an unidentified gunman.
According to an initial report from the Coron Municipal Police Station (MPS), the victim arrived in Barangay San Jose at around 1:15 p.m. and was preparing to return home when a suspect armed with a pistol suddenly appeared and opened fire.
The victim sustained fatal gunshot wounds and died on the spot, police said.
Authorities received a report from a concerned citizen at around 1:30 p.m., prompting responding officers led by Police Capt. Mark RJ P. Sigue, officer-in-charge of Coron MPS, to proceed to the area and begin an investigation.
Police have yet to establish the motive behind the killing and have not released details on the identity of the suspect.
“Follow-up investigation and intelligence-driven operations are now ongoing to identify and arrest the suspect/s who remain at large,” the Palawan Police Provincial Office (PPO) said in a statement.
Palawan PPO Director Col. Joel D. Casupanan assured the victim’s family that authorities are pursuing all available leads to bring those responsible to justice.
“Palawan PPO will exert all efforts to bring the suspect/s to justice,” Casupanan said.
Police are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to coordinate with Coron MPS through its hotline as investigators continue to track down the suspect.
Editor’s Note: This story was updated to correct an earlier version that incorrectly identified the victim as a fish vendor. Police said the victim was in Barangay San Jose to buy fish at the time of the incident.
