Lt. Col. Canson passes MBLT-9 leadership to Maj. Geli

Marine Battalion Landing Team-9 (MBLT-9) held its change of command ceremony on Thursday in Puerto Princesa City.

The event officially marked the transfer of leadership of the battalion with its specialized Marine Amphibious Ready Unit (MARU) from Lieutenant Colonel Alquin Canson to Major Rommel Geli, with Philippine Marine Corps (PMC) Commandant Maj. Gen. Arturo Rojas presiding over the ceremony.

Canson, in his farewell address, thanked the battalion for their service and dedication. He acknowledged the challenges the unit had faced and commended the collective efforts of its personnel in accomplishing their mission.

“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to you all. Your extraordinary service, heroism, and readiness have been key in accomplishing our mission, especially those of you in the islands and at the frontline, safeguarding our sovereignty. You are the true embodiment of what it means to be ‘The Marines’,” Canson said.

“Together, we have faced trials that have tested our strength, and we have emerged stronger. The challenges we have overcome have only served to deepen the bonds of camaraderie and reinforce the spirit of teamwork that defines us. Each one of you, whether officer or enlisted personnel, has made invaluable contributions to our success, and I want to personally thank you for your hard work, resilience, and sacrifice,” he added.

He presented a letter of commendation to the battalion, received by the Executive Officer, and expressed confidence in the incoming commander’s leadership.

Geli outlined his command philosophy, focusing on mission readiness, integrity, and fostering a warrior’s mindset.

He expressed commitment to maintaining the battalion’s operational capabilities and upholding its mission in Palawan.

“Our battalion must remain ready and uphold ethical standards in every operation,” Geli said. He called on the personnel to continue their dedication and teamwork.

Geli, a member of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 2007, has undergone extensive training in intelligence operations, including the Intelligence Officer Basic Course and counterintelligence training.

His operational experience includes serving in challenging environments such as Sulu, where he held key leadership roles, including Executive Officer and Operations Officer (S3) of Marine Battalion Landing Team-3.

His contributions to intelligence operations and the successful neutralization of high-value targets have been recognized with awards, including the Distinguished Navy Cross and multiple Silver Cross Medals.

Maj. Gen. Rojas commended the leadership of Lt. Col. Canson and welcomed Maj. Geli as the new commander. He outlined the expectations for the battalion under its new leadership, emphasizing operational readiness, collaboration with stakeholders, and adherence to core values.

“Readiness and teamwork are essential for mission success,” Rojas said. He urged the battalion to uphold the standards of the Marine Corps in their future operations.
