LPA off Palawan may weaken in 24 hrs

A low pressure area located near Cuyo, Palawan, continues to bring rains and thunderstorms across several regions in the country, state weather specialist Benison Estareja said on Thursday.

“As of 3 in the morning, nandito pa rin siya sa may Northern Suleu Sea at huling namataan, 80 kilometers east-northeast of Cuyo, Palawan,” Estareja reported.

Even though the system is weakening, it will continue to affect Southern Luzon, Visayas, and northern parts of Mindanao. In Palawan, Western Visayas, and the Negros Island Region, residents should expect overcast skies and scattered rain in the morning that could last until the evening.

Meanwhile, the easterlies, or warm winds from the Pacific Ocean, will continue to bring hot and humid weather over much of Luzon and Mindanao.

Afternoon thunderstorms are also likely due to moisture in the air.

In Metro Manila, skies may start clear but could become cloudy by noon, with chances of rain and thunderstorms later in the day.

Areas like Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, and other parts of Eastern Luzon are expected to experience similar conditions. Temperatures in the capital may reach 34°C, while Baguio City will range from 17°C to 24°C.

Heat index levels remain dangerously high in parts of Luzon. Cavite City reached 46°C on Wednesday, and southern Metro Manila hit 43°C. PAGASA forecasts that areas such as Pangasinan, Tarlac, and Northern Palawan may feel heat index levels between 42°C and 44°C today.

Estareja said the rainy weather is likely to continue as the long weekend approaches, including on Election Day, May 12.

Rain will be caused by the lingering low pressure area (LPA) and a developing frontal system over the northernmost islands of Batanes and Babuyan.

“As of 3 in the morning, nandito pa rin siya sa may Northern Sulu Sea at huling namataan, 80 kilometers east-northeast of Cuyo, Palawan,” ulat ni Estareja.
