The Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm sustained its agricultural productivity after harvesting mature saba bananas on January 16 at its Central Sub Colony in Puerto Princesa City, prison officials said.
The initial harvest was carried out by 13 persons deprived of liberty assigned to the Banana Section, marking continued output from the prison farm and supporting food production inside the facility.
Officials said the participating PsDL received compensation as part of the facility’s reformation efforts under the Work and Livelihood Program, which aims to develop skills and promote productive engagement among inmates.
The Bureau of Corrections supports agricultural activities at Iwahig as part of efforts to strengthen reformation, self sufficiency, and meaningful work for persons deprived of liberty, according to prison officials.
Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm is one of the largest penal farms in the country and has long operated agricultural programs as part of inmate rehabilitation in Puerto Princesa City.
