Southwest monsoon continues to affect Luzon, rain expected in Visayas, Palawan

The southwest monsoon continues to impact Luzon, bringing partly cloudy to cloudy skies with possible rain and thunderstorms to the Visayas, Palawan, including the Kalayaan Islands, and Occidental Mindoro, according to a forecast released by the state weather bureau on Sunday morning, September 8.

Light to moderate winds from the southwest to southeast are also expected in these areas, with sea conditions remaining slight to moderate.

Meanwhile, PAGASA weather specialist Grace Castañeda reported that two low-pressure areas (LPAs) are currently being monitored outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). One LPA was last spotted east-northeast of extreme northern Luzon, while the other was located east of Mindanao.

“These two LPAs have the potential to develop into tropical cyclones in the coming days, but within the next 24 hours, the chances remain low. Based on our latest analysis, these systems are not expected to directly affect any part of the country,” said Castañeda.

She added that the LPA near extreme northern Luzon could slightly enhance the southwest monsoon once it moves closer to the northern boundary of PAR. This may increase the likelihood of rainfall in the western parts of northern and central Luzon.

Similarly, the LPA east of Mindanao could also pull in the southwest monsoon if it moves closer to PAR.

“By the second half of this week, we may see increased chances of rain in the western sections of the Visayas and Mindanao due to the southwest monsoon,” Castañeda noted.

Currently, the southwest monsoon remains the prevailing weather system across Luzon, with a high chance of rain, lightning, and thunderstorms in the northern and western sections of northern Luzon throughout the day.
