Gov. Alvarez assures readiness as Palawan braces for fuel price impact

Palawan is moving early to shield communities from the impact of the national energy emergency, as officials shift focus from supply concerns to rising fuel costs and climate risks.

Governor Amy Alvarez led the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) first quarter meeting on March 25 in Puerto Princesa City, where the province’s readiness for energy and climate-related challenges was outlined.

Officials confirmed that fuel supply in Palawan remains sufficient and continuous, easing fears of shortages. However, the council flagged the growing impact of higher fuel prices on transportation, food supply, and daily livelihoods.

“The province is closely monitoring the situation to ensure communities are protected from potential disruptions,” the PDRRMC said.

Discussions during the meeting centered on how the State of National Energy Emergency could affect key sectors, including electricity, transport, agriculture, tourism, and the broader local economy.

In response, the council introduced the Provincial Unified Energy and Disaster Resilience Package, aimed at improving coordination among agencies, strengthening preparedness, and ensuring faster response to emerging risks.

Weather updates from PAGASA and mitigation measures for extreme heat were also presented, linking the energy situation with ongoing climate pressures.

Several measures were approved, including lifting the State of Calamity for Typhoon Tino, programming the 2025 Unutilized DRRM Trust Fund, and forging partnerships with DOST and DENR for flood early warning systems. The council also secured emergency transport arrangements with Montenegro Shipping Lines and designated the PSDTI as an alternative emergency operations center.

“Early preparation, clear coordination, and accurate information are key to protecting every Palaweño,” Gov. Alvarez said.

The meeting underscored the province’s focus on preparing for potential impacts, as officials work to manage both rising costs and environmental risks.
