Brooke’s Point Vice Mayor Mary Jean Feliciano was named a Climate Heroes Awardee by the Climate Change Commission for her leadership in environmental protection and climate justice.
Feliciano confirmed on Facebook receiving the CCC’s Nov. 19 letter inviting her to the Climate Convergence: Innovation, Leadership and Advocacy Forum on Nov. 23 at the University of Makati in Taguig City.
The commission cited her “outstanding contributions to environmental stewardship, sustainability leadership, and community driven climate action.”
The CCC said she was selected for “exemplary efforts in advancing resilience, sustainability, and climate justice,” recognizing individuals whose work demonstrates courage, innovation, and compassion in protecting communities and the environment.
Feliciano said the award affirms years of advocacy in defense of Brooke’s Point’s natural resources.
“Ito ay isang patunay na hindi nasayang ang bawat paghihirap, sakripisyo, at paninindigan para sa kalikasan,” she said.
She recalled challenges in office, including her suspension while opposing mining operations.
“Dumating ang pagkakataong nasubok ang aking pamumuno at katapatan, lalo na sa pagtatanggol sa ating kalikasan,” Feliciano added, noting that the recognition belongs to the community.
“Ito ay para sa bawat mamamayan ng Brooke’s Point na nakiisa sa adbokasiya,” she added.
The Brooke’s Point Municipal Information Office issued a statement congratulating the former town mayor.
“Malugod naming ipinagdiriwang ang pagkilalang Climate Heroes Awardee ng Climate Change Commission. Saludo kami sa iyong dedikasyon at paninindigan para sa kalikasan at sa mamamayan ng Brooke’s Point,” it said.
