Two detainees at the Palawan Provincial Jail (PPJ) have been allowed to post bail for temporary liberty after a four-day marathon hearing of their cases by the government’s Enhanced Justice on Wheels (EJOW).
Provincial Jail Management Division (PJMD) officer-in-charge Jose Sany Rabago said that through the EJOW, the two detainees did not have to take long journeys to Coron to attend their hearings.
“Basically, sa EJOW ay pinapabilis ang takbo ng kaso, dito sila hahatulan kung sentensyado sila. Napakalaki at napakaganda ng programa na ito, kasi previously wala silang EJOW dito. Kailangan pa namin silang ihatid sa Coron para lang pumunta ng hearing may time na mayroong bagyo, na ka-cancel yung hearing nila, may time din na kulang sa pondo kung minsan, so napalaki talaga ang naitutulong ng ganitong programa,” Rabago said.
EJOW is a program of the Department of Justice (DOJ) that gives access to justice by assisting in the speedy resolution of cases and expediting the release of prisoners.
A total of 196 detainees from the Coron Municipal Trial Court (MTC) Branch 164 benefited from the EJOW.
“Ito kasing program ng DOJ, ay sila mismo ang pupunta dito sa ating kulungan pala mapabilis ang paglilitis ng mga kaso. Sa ngayon ay mayroon na tayong dalawang nakapagpiyansa at ang iba ay ongoing ang proseso ng GCTA para doon sa pag-avail nila ng GCTA.
Rabago added that EJOW not only helps the justice services but also decongests the jail.
“Hindi lang naman ito para mapadali at maisaayos ang ating justice system, tinutulungan din ng EJOW na ma-decongest ang ating kulungan sa panahon na may mga lumaya at papalayain,” he said.
