The Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday reminded students, teachers, and school personnel that the use of gadgets during class hours remains prohibited in public schools, except when needed for learning activities or emergencies.
The reminder comes as the agency continues implementing DepEd Order No. 6, s. 2026, also known as the Guidelines on Ensuring a Safe and Motivating Learning Environment, which aims to promote responsible use of the internet and electronic devices in schools.
In a memorandum, DepEd said the policy “expressly prohibits the use of portable electronic devices during instructional hours by both learners and personnel.”
The prohibition covers activities such as using social media, playing online games, creating content, and vlogging while classes are in session.
DepEd clarified that gadgets may only be used when authorized by teachers for educational purposes, such as accessing digital learning materials, participating in online classroom activities, or using educational platforms.
The agency also allows the use of electronic devices during emergencies, including disasters, medical incidents, or other situations where immediate communication is necessary.
To reinforce the policy, DepEd directed all regional and field offices, as well as public schools, to intensify information campaigns on the responsible use of the internet and digital devices.
The reminder forms part of the department’s broader efforts to maintain a safe, focused, and orderly learning environment in public schools nationwide.
