Two arrested in alleged extortion case against SK chairman

A man was arrested in an entrapment operation while his companion initially escaped but later personally surrendered to the police in connection with the alleged extortion and blackmail of a Sangguniang Kabataan chairman in the town early Wednesday morning, May 6.

The arrested suspect, who served as the rider, is a 23-year-old mechanic and resident of Barangay District II, while the motorcycle driver who escaped was identified only by the alias “Puting.”

According to the police report, the victim sought assistance from the police station on May 5 after receiving threats from a fake Facebook account demanding money.

The victim alleged that he was being asked to pay ₱15,000 in exchange for not spreading his private conversation with the suspect.

Authorities immediately launched an operation near Brooke’s Point Central School, which resulted in the arrest of one of the suspects.

Before the operation, the marked money was placed inside a trash bag. At around 1 a.m., two men riding a motorcycle arrived at the area. The back rider was arrested while the driver, alias Puting, escaped in an unknown direction.

Recovered from the suspect was the total amount of ₱15,000, of which three bills were genuine money while the remaining 12 were marked money.

Aside from the cash, authorities also recovered a glass tube containing residue of suspected marijuana and a lighter from the suspect.

According to the investigator, the driver may have sensed the operation, allowing him to flee quickly. However, at around 11 a.m. on Wednesday, he personally surrendered to the police.

Nasa kustodiya na sila ng ating istasyon,” the investigator said.

Both suspects are now under police custody while appropriate charges are being prepared against them.
