The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) handed over a state-of-the-art greenhouse-type solar drying facility to two local seaweed production groups in Coron.
The DTI said Tuesday that the turnover ceremony, held on November 20, underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality and sustainability of the region’s seaweed industry.
The facility, awarded by the Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA) and the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), incorporates advanced drying technology that produces higher-quality dried seaweed.
The innovation addresses the unique needs of the seaweed sector, ensuring products meet stringent quality standards for both local and global markets.
The greenhouse drying method utilized by the facility is based on research highlighting its advantages over traditional drying methods. Studies indicate that greenhouse-dried agricultural products are not only healthier but also of superior quality, meeting the rising demand for premium seaweed products.
The primary beneficiaries of the facility are the Marcilla Seaweed Growers Association (MSGA) and the Calamianes Seaweed Marketing Cooperative (CSMC).
Aside from the drying technology, KIPA and KIPO are also extending branding assistance to these groups, including logo design and brand messaging, to enhance market visibility and competitiveness.
“This marks our fourth year of partnership with KIPA and KIPO, and we are extremely grateful to the Korean government and the Korean people for helping MIMAROPA entrepreneurs by promoting innovation through the protection of intellectual property and introducing brand identity to our MSMEs,” said DTI MIMAROPA Regional Director Joel Mariposque.
He also called on stakeholders to support sustainable food initiatives in the region.
Key figures present at the ceremony included KIPA representative Yeon Hayoung, Shinhan A-tec’s Doyum Kim, Fenomeno’s Gio Kisang, MSGA Chairman Rolando Lizando, and CSMC Chairman Laurencio De Lima, along with other organization members and local stakeholders.
The solar-powered drying facility is the second of its kind launched by DTI MIMAROPA.
The first, a fish processing facility in Bogtong, Busuanga, has already demonstrated the potential of solar technology to transform traditional industries.
The DTI said this latest development is expected to strengthen the competitiveness of Coron’s seaweed producers, paving the way for a more sustainable and profitable seaweed industry in the MIMAROPA region.
