Educators from Coron and Busuanga completed a three-day training on environmental sustainability and biodiversity conservation aimed at helping schools incorporate environmental education into classroom and community activities.
The capacity-building program was conducted by the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff–ECAN Education and Extension Division (PCSDS-EEED) from September 8 to 10, 2026.
The training introduced participants to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), with discussions covering the Palawan Biosphere Reserve and the Strategic Environmental Plan (SEP) for Palawan.
A key focus was the “ridge-to-reef” approach, which looks at the connections between terrestrial and marine ecosystems, from forests and wildlife habitats to coastal and ocean environments.
Participants also discussed wildlife conservation and the role of communities in protecting Palawan’s natural resources, with emphasis on how schools can engage students and other stakeholders in environmental action.
The training included field activities at Siete Pecados Marine Park, an ECAN learning site in Coron where conservation efforts are supported by the local Indigenous community, coastal guardians and other stakeholders.
The visit allowed educators to observe community-based approaches to protecting marine and coastal resources and learn how local participation contributes to conservation.
The participants also visited Coron Natural Farms, an ECAN learning site for Conservation Agriculture for Organic Agriculture (CA4OA).
There, they were introduced to organic and integrated farming practices, including concepts related to a circular agriculture economy.
Through lectures, hands-on activities, community immersion and discussions, the program provided educators with approaches they can use to integrate sustainability concepts into teaching and learning.
The training concluded with participants reflecting on their role in promoting environmental practices in their schools and helping students develop greater awareness and responsibility as environmental stewards.
