The Commission on Elections on Wednesday assured the public that the 2028 national elections will push through, rejecting speculations of a supposed no-election scenario.
Comelec Chairperson George Garcia said the Constitution clearly mandates the holding of elections in 2028, making any “no-el” scenario impossible.
“No-el 2028 will not happen. It’s a mandate of the Constitution to have an election in that year,” Garcia said in a Viber message.
“No contingency for a no-el because the election is certain to happen,” he added.
Garcia said the poll body has already started preparations for the next national elections, including studies on election automation, voter registration, and the drafting of new rules and guidelines.
“In fact, we, though two years away, are now making preparations,” he said.
The Comelec chief also emphasized that no law can override constitutional provisions requiring regular elections.
“It’s not just about passing a law. No higher laws than the Constitution,” Garcia said.
The statement came after Imee Marcos raised allegations of a supposed plot to extend the term of Ferdinand Marcos Jr..
The President earlier dismissed the senator’s claims.
