The Commission on Audit (COA) has ordered Balabac mayor Shuaib Astami to reimburse the government an estimated P93 million in expenditures that were unsupported by documents.

The order came following a recent COA Commission Proper decision affirming an earlier ruling to hold Astami liable for unexplained expenses as the mayor of the municipality.

The COA panel headed by chairman Michael Aguinaldo also held responsible for the unsupported expenses acting municipal treasurer Hexon Maramba, officer-in-charge municipal accountant Kiram Abbas, and Hussin Ibrahim.

They were ordered to repay the amount spent in 2013 by the municipal government after it was rejected as justifiable expenses by the regional office of the COA.

Astami and the other officials filed a motion in 2015 to reverse the disallowance notice issued by the COA in the region, but the state auditing agency said it was “filed out of time” or past the required period.

Palawan News has tried several times but failed to get Astami’s side regarding the matter.
