The Sangguniang Panlungsod is pushing for an ordinance that will grant “cash incentives” to Puerto Princesa students who bring home medals from academic competitions.
The Committee on Appropriations approved the proposed measure, clearing it for reporting to the plenary on Monday, March 16, for third reading and final approval.
If enacted, the ordinance will provide financial rewards to students who win medals in local, regional, national, and international academic competitions.
Councilor Victor Oliveros, author of the resolution, said the incentives will likely follow the model used for sports awards, with amounts based on the medal earned such as “gold, silver, bronze.”
He said the program may only be implemented next year since the funding for the incentives was not included in the city’s 2026 budget.
Oliveros added that the proposal was inspired by the continued achievements of Puerto Princesa students in international academic competitions, which have brought recognition to the city.
