CIDG subpoenas players, coaches in probe on Ateneo athletes’ drowning in Aurora

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) has issued subpoenas to several individuals, including coaches and players, as part of its investigation into the drowning of Ateneo basketball players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili in Dipaculao, Aurora.

CIDG chief Maj. Gen. Robert Morico II said investigators have already identified multiple persons of interest and are seeking their accounts regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Subpoenaed individuals, which include members of the team present during the team-building activity, have been directed to appear at the CIDG headquarters in Camp Crame on Monday for questioning.

Authorities said the aim of the inquiry is to determine whether proper safety measures, medical preparedness, and supervision were in place during the activity organized for the student-athletes.

“We are looking into whether the school authorities concerned were able to prepare for the safety and medical needs of the athletes who participated in the team-building activity,” Morico said, referring to the involvement of school officials and team personnel during the outing.

The CIDG also confirmed that it has requested the Department of Justice to issue an Immigration Lookout Bulletin Order (ILBO) covering certain persons of interest, including a foreign national, to ensure they remain available for investigation.

Morico said compliance is being sought voluntarily but warned that legal mechanisms are in place should individuals refuse to cooperate.

“The purpose of this update is to encourage them to cooperate in the interest of justice. Two lives were lost—one a foreign national and the other a young student in the prime of his life,” he said.

The CIDG also indicated that additional subpoenas may be issued to former Ateneo players who previously raised concerns about alleged intense training practices under the basketball program.

Officials stressed that the probe is being conducted fairly and thoroughly, with the objective of establishing a clear and evidence-based account of the events leading to the drowning incident.

Baterbonia and Adili, members of the Ateneo men’s basketball program, died after reportedly drowning during a team-building activity at a resort in Dipaculao earlier this week.
