Palawan State University’s College of Teacher Education received the Excellence in Quality Assurance in Teacher Education Award on Wednesday, given by the Commission on Higher Education to recognize the institution’s quality education and service, resulting in consistently high performance in licensure examinations and accreditation.
The Commission on Higher Education-Office of Programs and Standards Development (CHED-OPSD) hosted the Excellence in Quality Assurance in Teacher Education (EQUATE) Awards at the Manila Hotel on April 2, recognizing high-performing teacher education institutions (TEIs) nationwide.
Palawan SU is one of three universities in MIMAROPA given this recognition, with the other two being Mindoro State University and Marinduque State University.
Palawan SU thus ranked among other top universities with quality TEIs, such as Saint Louis University and the University of San Agustin, by consistently meeting the standards set by CHED for program accreditation, along with their graduates’ strong performance in the Board Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers (BLEPT).
Notably, Palawan SU started as a teacher training institution in the 1960s, when it was still known as Palawan Teachers College.
As the oldest department in the university, the College of Teacher Education has continuously improved its instruction through the years, evolving into Palawan SU. CTE is one of two colleges in the MIMAROPA region considered a Center of Excellence (COE), another CHED recognition given to colleges demonstrating quality performance in instruction, research, and publications generated by the department.
CHED MIMAROPA Regional Director Edna Imelda Legazpi, who previously served as a professor at Palawan SU-CTE, noted the department’s performance during her courtesy call at the Sangguniang Panlungsod in February this year.
She stated that while both Palawan SU and Western Philippines University were considering a potential amalgamation of programs offered by both state universities, Palawan SU’s College of Teacher Education and WPU’s College of Fisheries and Natural Sciences were excluded from merging considerations due to their status as COEs.
“Pag sinabi mong Center of Excellence, mataas ang compliance nila. So from 1996 up to present time, na-maintain ng College of Teacher Education ng Palawan SU ang pagiging COE sa teacher education. Maganda rin ang performance ng WPU sa College of Teacher Education; however, nag-a-apply pa lang sila bilang Center of Development o COE. Pero magaganda ang LET results nila. At the moment, parehong strong ang program nila,” she said.
